Changes to ECIT Department

When you come back in the fall you will see many changes to the Electronics, Computer and Information Technology Department. I will not give you my opinion on whether these changes are for good or ill. But one change that you will see is that I will not be returning for the fall semester. Who will be teaching my classes, advising you or working with the IEEE Robot Team is not for me to decide, and I apologize if it inconveniences any of you, but I must move on.

I wish you good bye and good luck.

Student Health Insurance

Dates to waive health insurance for the Fall Semester May 1, 2008 through August 31, 2008

All Undergraduate Students and Graduate or Professional Students, taking 6 or more credit hours, and all International Students, are required to have medical insurance coverage as a condition of enrollment.

If you have health insurance coverage either on your own, through your parents, or a spouse then you may submit your proof of insurance and waive the Student Health Insurance Plan. Just remember to submit your insurance waiver prior to the waiver deadline. All you need to do is visit www.studentinsurance.com and waive the coverage online. Enter your student data along with your current insurance information and submit. You must waive out of the University Plan each semester.

Be sure you print your confirmation page and keep it for your records. This will serve as your receipt and is proof that you complied with the university requirement. Adjustments will NOT be made after the deadline if you DO NOT have your confirmation page or confirmation number.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU WILL BE ENROLLED IN THE UNIVERSITY HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN IF YOU FAIL TO APPROPRIATELY WAIVE COVERAGE BY THE DEADLINE.

Grades

I have updated GRADEWATCH to include ALL WORK handed in by 5pm 10pm on 5/5/08 5/6/08.

If you find an error, or a grade is missing, please email me or see me 5/6 ASAP to correct the error BEFORE I enter my grades to Aggie Access!

For students who are in ECT 313 who have not turned in your project boards yet, you will see "F" listed for your total numerical score (listed as "ALL"). This will be corrected once your project board is returned. Failure to return your board by 5pm 5/6/08 will result in an "F" for the semester, so get those boards in! Since I will be out of the office 5/7 till grades are due, if you need to hand in a board, please turn it into any ECIT faculty or staff and have them email me saying they have recieved the board and who turned it in.

    Server Outage

As you are probably aware, this website was down from April 12 at aprox 11am till April 14 at aprox 11am.

This outage was due to TIME WARNER Cable shutting down my modem because they detected what they thought was a phishing scheme running from my server. In reality it was a page I copied off of ebay for an item that I purchased that was put on my Personal Projects Page.

    Lessons learned:
  • NEVER COPY (with I.E. "save as" command) a webpage off of eBay.
  • Time Warner can shut down any modem at anytime but the people who can reactivate the account only work Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm.
  • Time Warner does not contact the account holder before shutting down and internet connection. If they did I would have found the problem and corrected it immediately.

    How does this affect you:
  • Do NOT ask for extra time on assignments due to this outage, it will NOT be granted! If it caused you any inconvenience CALL TIME WARNER!

    EMC Presentation

A Quick Look into the World of Data Storage
by Ed Van Sickle of EMC Corporation

    Location: 2014 Smith Hall.
    Time: Noon to 1PM.
    Date: Thursday, March 27, 2008.
    Lunch will be served.

    Abstract:

We truly live in the information age. With on-line access, one can shop, pay bills electronically and monitor balances, exchange information and ideas (e.g. ebay, facebook, google, wikipedia), download movies, buy music files and more. With access to so much information, it can be mind-boggling.

How would you feel if this information was unavailable or, better yet, your personal information was compromised?

IT Managers wrestle with these problems on a daily/hourly basis. They have to manage growing volumes of data, year after year, and protect against the impact of data outages, data loss and data theft. This session will reveal the information growth problem, the typical IT response and problems with that solution.

Students will be exposed to the newer data storage technologies that allow IT organizations to manage, share and protect their most critical asset - their data.

    IT Announcement

Recent problems with Blackboard® access for students and faculty are caused by invalid e-mail accounts listed in Aggie-Access Online. Since the implementation of Banner Student, these invalid accounts caused interference with the interface between Banner and Blackboard®. The result is that some students and faculty have been unable to access their Blackboard® course shells.

To resolve this problem, NC A&T State University will require all faculty, staff, and students to maintain a NCAT e-mail account (username@ncat.edu) as the primary e-mail account to receive all university-related communication. Faculty and students are expected to use their NCAT e-mail account regularly to obtain important university-related information.

Non-NCAT e-mail accounts stored in the Banner and Blackboard® systems for faculty, staff, and students will be removed as the primary e-mail account Tuesday, September 11, 2007. Only unique NCAT e-mail addresses will be stored in the Banner and Blackboard® systems after September 11, 2007. Failure to create an NCAT e-mail account may lead to inability to access Blackboard®.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to provide better IT services for our user community.

Students, did you know you can go by the bookstore before leaving at the end of SPRING 2007 with your FALL 2007 schedules, fill out a pre-pack form and the bookstore staff will pull books, box and hold them until you return in the FALL? Well you can!*

*Note: If you plan to take advantage of the tax free weekend (first weekend in August) you must provide the bookstore with a valid credit card number, expiration date and a valid phone number where the card holder can be reached. Fall Registration

Pre-registration for Fall 2007 will start for all students April 2, 2007 via A&T.s NEW Banner student web system.

Don't wait until the last minute to register for fall classes 2007. Students registering on or after August 20, 2007 will be assessed a non-refundable $50 Late Registration Fee.

Students registering during the pre-registration period will have fees assessed after July 1, 2007. You will be notified when fees are due. Registration is not final until all fees have been paid, and is subject to cancellation for non-payment or to collection.

Students will need to see their academic advisor, faculty advisor or department chairperson to obtain their PIN. You will need your nine-digit Banner ID and PIN to access the NEW student web system.

Prior to registering for your fall 2007 classes you should check your registration status and view any possible holds via the student web. Contact the appropriate office if you have any holds or registration restrictions.

Please refer to the Fall 2007 Schedule of Classes for important information on registration dates, deadlines, and for instructions on how to use A&T.s NEW student web system.

The Banner student ID replaces your social security number as your primary student identifier. You will be asked for your Banner student ID effective for fall 2007 transactions.

On Wednesday, March 21, 2007, students can request their Banner ID.s on-line by following these simple steps:

Go to the Aggie Access ON-LINE web page
Click on the Request Banner Generated ID link on the Related Links section
Read the security alert and click the OK button
Follow the instructions on the Banner Generated ID Retrieval system web page.

    Summer School ECIT Classes

The 2007 Summer School Schedule of classes for ECIT is incorrect. Many classes were canceled due to a directive from the Office of Summer Sessions and Outreach that said that if a class did not have at least 10 students in Summer 2006 it would not be run in Summer 2007. The Class Schedule on Aggie Access will be corrected shortly (but after registration begins). Check Aggie Access often to verify the classes you chose to take this summer were not cancled!

    Commencement Participation Policy

Two commencement programs are scheduled each year, one in December for fall and summer graduates and one in May for spring graduates. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible to participate in the commencement:

•Have completed degree requirements the semester/session prior to the upcoming commencement ceremony for which they plan to participate; or

•Be enrolled in the final courses and/or academic activity necessary to complete degree requirements in the semester for which they plan to participate in the respective commencement.

In either scenario, all students must submit an application for graduation to the Registrar's Office prior to the commencement deadline for either May or December. The student must be 'cleared' by the Registrar's Office to be approved to participate in the commencement activities.

Students who complete degree requirements during summer session(s) will NOT be eligible to participate in the preceding May commencement activities. However, they will be eligible to participate in either the following December or May commencement provided they meet the respective requirements as stated above.

    Banner is coming...........

    - I was informed by a student that they received their new student ID this past week...so watch your mail for this important letter!

    - They have started setting up the links for the OLD (Summer) and NEW (Fall) Aggie Access. (click here)

    - Courses and Labs will be linked (so no more ECT and ECTL, now they will just be ECT). I am not sure how this will work yet....so stay tuned for more on this!

    Q - What is Banner?

A - Banner is a database program that will soon be replacing the current system that is responsible for registration and record keeping for students.

Q - How does this affect me?

A - For Fall registration you will be receiving a NEW student ID (Social security numbers will no longer be used). You should receive a letter, sent to your permanent mail address, containing this number. Also, for fall registration you will be using a NEW AGGIE ACCESS system. This system will be very similar to the old one accept you will have to use your new ID # and you will have TWO pin numbers. Your "PERMANENT PIN" will be used to access Aggie Access for everyday functions (ie grades, payment info, see your schedule etc...) and a "TEMPORARY PIN" for registration that will be changed each semester which you will receive when you are advised.

Q - Will this have any effect on Graduation?

A - Hopefully NO......but it might create some minor problems. One issue will be that, since it is difficult to enter all the requirements for every major for every year, the computer will think every student is on the 2007-08 catalog. This could mean that extra substitutions will have to be done to make the computer think you have done all the requirements for the new catalog year using courses you were required to take for your catalog.

It is also possible that substitutions already done (especially for transfer students) could get lost in the transfer process. It is MY SUGGESTION that if you are worried about this, get an OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT from the registrar's office before the end of MARCH so you have an official record of transfers already done before the new system takes effect.

Q - Does this effect Summer School?

A - No, you will still use your old ID number and pin and use the OLD AGGIE ACCESS to register for summer.

Disclaimer: This information is provided as a "heads up" for students, but is NOT OFFICIAL, it is subject to change. As registration approaches, I would hope that information will be distributed to students via official sources.
