I would like to welcome all of you to participate in IBM University Day this coming October 30 (Tuesday), 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in RTP at the IBM Employee Activity and Fitness Center ( EAFC ; directions at the bottom of this note). Registration and poster set-up begins at 8 a.m. The schedule of events is attached below.

This is an important opportunity to showcase what the academic community has to offer industry. For students, it is specifically an opportunity to meet with prospective employers within the IBM RTP development community. In addition to IBM research, representatives from all IBM divisions at the site have been invited, and so there will be representation from IBM Software Group (SWG), IBM Server and Technology Group (STG), IBM services and others. Also on hand will be representatives from all corporate and local IBM university relations programs, that support joint research projects and/or recruit students. This is also an opportunity to hear what other local universities are doing.

We have a very exciting slate of speakers, that include some of the most distinguished faculty and executives from our local universities. In addition to the executive keynote speeches by University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) President Freeman Hrabowski and IBM Senior Vice President Rod Adkins (who manages development and manufacturing for all IBM servers and chip technology), we will have:

Kay Moore (Dean, College of Education, NC State) will open our first IBM K-12 Day as part of this fall's event , at which many of the local universities (including NC State, WFU, NCCU, Duke and UNC-CH) will summarize their K-12 outreach activities. Glenn Kleiman (Director, Friday Institute) NC State) will provide an overview of the many projects that his institute is driving on behalf of education in the state.

Jay Dominick (Assistant Vice President and CIO, Wake Forest University) will describe some of the exciting new initiatives that his university is leading within the Winston-Salem educational community via WinstonNet.

Bill Chu (Chair, Software and Information Systems Dept.) will summarize the research being pursued by his department at UNC-Charlotte , while several faculty from UNC-Pembroke will summarize the collaborative and other opportunities available at their university.

Nevin Fouts (Duke) and Cameron Seay (NCCU) will provide updates on the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) activities associated with their business schools and campuses at large, using blade/modular and virtualization technolgies - while Yannis Viniotis (ECE Dept., NC State) will discuss the exciting educational activities that have been launched in the region around large systems (mainframe) technologies. Lynda Aiman-Smith and Mitzi Montoya-Weiss (NC State) will also give an update on efforts to establish a research agenda in service sciences.

Sue Horn (the senior IBM SWG executive for the RTP site and an executive sponsor of the RTP Center for Advanced Studies or CAS) will be announcing several major university awards. And several IBM program managers/directors will provide details on opportunities for collaboration and support.

Also, for your students, IBM Recruiting and Extreme Blue will be on hand. There will also be space for poster sessions/demonstrations by students and faculty - so please contact me immediately (rindos@us.ibm.com) with your poster title if you plan on presenting.

So professors, please encourage your undergraduate and graduate students to attend and present a poster. A poster is a great way for a student to attract the attention of the IBMers in attendance.

Lunch (and a light breakfast, coffee, beverages, etc.) will be provided. Please notify me (rindos@us.ibm.com) if you plan to attend. This time out, there are no attendance restrictions.

I therefore hope you and your students will join us. Please forward this invitation to other interested folks in your department and/or on campus (along with my apologies for failing to copy them). And do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or requests at rindos@us.ibm.com.
